Abstract
Unnecessary broad-spectrum antimicrobial exposure to patients can result in preventable adverse effects, drug–drug or drug–disease interactions, costs, and institutionalization. Pharmacist education includes acquiring expertise in the pharmacology and spectrum of the most commonly used antimicrobials as well as the commonly seen infectious syndromes and organisms and their unique resistance patterns. In clinical practice, pharmacists are tasked to maintain competency in the management of different infectious syndromes, acquire knowledge on novel antimicrobials, and minimize the impact of inappropriate use of antimicrobials while ensuring resolution of an infection. A structured approach to assessing patients with infections ensures that antimicrobial use is appropriate: the right drug, dose, and duration for the right indication.
