Abstract
The global burden of mental disorders, impacted by social determinants, is considerably large with serious consequences to those affected on a person level and to the systems that should provide them with care and support to minimize unnecessary suffering. Research and evidence have given a clear indication for the need to emphasize the importance of why mental health and persons living with mental disorders can no longer be ignored or neglected, because not only does it have severe consequences for the suffering of individuals affected but has even more consequences to the sustainable development and social and economic growth of countries.
This chapter provides an overview of evidence in global mental health pertaining to the prevalence of mental disorders, the factors that contributes to the burden of mental disorders, the short-comings in addressing the burden and evidence on what can and should be done to reduce the burden of mental disorders globally.
