Definition
A contributor to women’s periodicals, notably The Queen, the Lady’s Newspaper, and Court Chronicle, Lady Harriet Scott (1816–1894) utilized her platform to encourage engagement in philanthropy for the poor through knitting projects and to support female employment. Simultaneously, her sensation novels investigate female ambition, eventually depicting heroines as frustrated by defined gender roles and oppressed by inequitable marriage laws.
