Abstract

How does one go about finding manuscripts by early modern women? While some collections of poetry, prose, or letters have been identified, others may be hidden among household and legal papers of various kinds, in the margins of books, and even in collections of writings by men. This entry provides some strategies for searching, including experimenting with different forms of women’s names, and the use of online and print finding aids as well as biographical dictionaries. It then focuses on eighteen major American, British, and Continental libraries in more detail, providing brief summaries of their holdings related to women and search strategies for each, including links to various catalogs. It concludes with brief descriptions of seven specialized databases that aid in discovering women writers.
