Abstract

Grizell Love compiled an autobiographical account of her spiritual visions that survives in only one copy among the Wodrow manuscripts in the National Library of Scotland. Little is known about Love, but her extensive account is a fruitful source for both the private spiritual experiences of Scottish Covenanters and the public events and tragedies they suffered. Although concerned about her status as a woman writer, she recounts her reactions to various violent, national events during the seventeenth century (including the Covenanting Rebellions and the French-Dutch war). Through her articulation of these traumatic events, Love makes them manageable and establishes her literary authority.
