Substance Use Policy Interventions: Intended and Unintended Consequences

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Prevention of Substance Use

Part of the book series: Advances in Prevention Science ((Adv. Prevention Science))

Abstract

This chapter discusses policy interventions implemented at the community, state, and national level that can help to reduce substance use and abuse. Based on available evidence, the chapter’s focus is on both the intended and unintended consequences of policy interventions that affect substance use behavior by reducing the supply, increasing the cost, or restricting the marketing of a given substance. We examine these policy interventions in the context of four types of substances: alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other illicit drugs.
