Short Description

It has long been recognized that major congenital malformations (MCMs) occur more frequently in offspring of women with epilepsy when compared to the background population rate. Several large-scale prospective epilepsy and pregnancy registers have been established to determine the safety of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in pregnancy and to study the effect of epilepsy on pregnancy. Each of the main registries (UK Epilepsy and Pregnancy Register, EURAP and the North American AED Pregnancy Registry) has distinct methodologies.

Introduction

It has long been recognized that exposure to AEDs in pregnancy is associated with an increased rate of major congenital malformations in exposed offspring. Previous studies were flawed due to small sample sizes or retrospective design. Large-scale prospective registries have been established to primarily investigate the safety or otherwise of AEDs in human pregnancy.
