Abstract

This chapter reviews the rationale for the use of gastric electrical stimulation in children. The techniques for the placement of temporary and permanent stimulators are described. Gastric electrical stimulation is indicated in children with chronic nausea, vomiting, and early satiety with or without evidence of delayed gastric emptying, who have failed dietary and pharmacological treatment for their symptoms. Short- and medium-term outcome data are encouraging. The mechanisms by which the device provides symptom relief are not completely clear.
