Abstract

The association between restless legs syndrome (RLS) and end stage renal disease (ESRD) has been confirmed by numerous studies. In patients affected by chronic kidney disease, cardio- and cerebrovascular events represent the first cause of morbidity and mortality. In this population, the presence of RLS symptoms has been linked with an increased risk of cardio- and cerebrovascular events, as well as mortality. Moreover, RLS has been associated with a high prevalence of depression and sleep disorders such as insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness and movements disorders during sleep. Clinicians should make every effort to diagnose and treat symptoms of restless legs in this at-risk population.
