Abstract

Increasing the effectiveness of adherence interventions may have a far greater impact on the health of the population than any improvement in specific medical treatments. Improving adherence requires a closer understanding of the patients’ experience of their illness and medication, rather than only the perceptions and expectations of health-care professionals. When studying a complex and compound phenomenon such as adherence, qualitative research is the preferred paradigm. Although only conducted in the last few decades, qualitative research has contributed a great deal of insight to the concept of adherence. Owing to qualitative findings, nonadherence is no longer seen as a deviance from doctors’ advice but recognized as a well-reasoned behavior, shaped by both practical and perceptional barriers. This chapter aims to take the reader on the journey of adherence research, gaining thorough insights into its concept as a basis and stimulant for future research, best practices, and health policy.
