Abstract
This chapter aims to provide a broad overview of the evidence relating to open carotid endarterectomy and endovascular carotid stenting in the context of symptomatic and asymptomatic disease. Specific focus is placed on the rationale for further trials in this area, particularly in relation to asymptomatic carotid disease. This is because the concept of Best Medical Therapy is evolving (making older trials less relevant) and closer attention is being given to the risk/benefit profile of intervention for asymptomatic disease.
