Chronic Abdominal Pain

Abstract

Chronic abdominal pain is a frequently encountered problem of primary care physicians, gastroenterologists, and pain physicians. Generally it is defined as a continuous or intermittent abdominal discomfort lasting for at least 6 months. This chapter will discuss the epidemiology of a wide variety of etiologies ranging from organic to functional causes of chronic abdominal pain. The chapter will be divided based on three clear delineations of chronic abdominal pain, which include visceral, chronic somatosensory, and primarily functional abdominal pain. The incidence, prevalence, demographics, and environmental associations of these disorders will be discussed in detail.
