Substance Abuse

Abstract

Cocaine dependence continues to be a significant public health problem in the United States, with about 1.6 million current cocaine users and over 600,000 new cocaine users in the past year. Of this number, about 1.1 million are said to be dependent on or have abused cocaine in the past year (Results from the 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health: Summary of National Findings, 2013). It is estimated that 25 million people in the United States have used cocaine at least once (Henry’s clinical diagnosis and management by laboratory methods, 22nd edn, Saunders, Philadelphia, 2011). Cocaine abuse remains one of the leading causes of drug-related emergency department visits and hospital admissions.
