Abstract
In order to understand the principles and practice of nutritional support, it is essential to have a basic understanding of the structure and function of the living cell. This will provide the reader with some insight into what nutritional and metabolic requirements are necessary to sustain life and function. From this, we appreciate that nutritional requirements are genetically determined (“balanced nutrition”) and that insufficient or excess of any one nutrient (“unbalanced nutrition”) will impair function and thus our ability to recover from any life-threatening illness.
