Abstract

The management of head and neck disease using photodynamic therapy is currently being employed by few centres around the world. The last few years showed an increase in the number of clinicians with interest in this intervention as well as patients seeking this option, especially after failing some or all the conventional therapies (i.e. surgery, radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy). The application of photodynamic therapy requires special training and multidiscipline team involvement. The treating clinician should be able to manage the PDT patient perioperatively, understand the tissue reactions to PDT and deal with any potential post-PDT unwanted events. As with any discipline in medicine, knowledge and experience are invaluable in this area.
