Abstract
The importance of understanding surgical anatomy prior to initiating surgical dissection cannot be overstated. A fundamental knowledge of the surgical anatomy and various approaches allows the surgeon the ability to proceed in a safe manner, perform an appropriate oncological resection, when required, and allow for additional diagnostic and therapeutic maneuvering while maximizing quality of life and simultaneously reducing morbidity. The critical structures for each operation, when possible, should be immediately considered. If the anatomy is unclear, then one should reestablish the anatomy to a familiar orientation without compromising one’s technique.
