Abstract
Gastrinoma is the second most common islet cell tumor of the pancreas and the most common symptomatic malignant endocrine tumor of the pancreas. Gastrinomas are associated with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES), which is characterized by severe peptic ulcer disease, hypersecretion of gastric acid, and a non-beta islet cell tumor of the pancreas. This tumor is now understood to be a gastrin-secreting duodenal or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor—or gastrinoma—and it is the cause of peptic ulcer disease in 0.1–1 % of patients. ZES occurs sporadically in 75–80 % of cases and as part of multiple endocrine neoplasia I in the rest.
