Abstract
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) first issued NFPA Standard 13D: Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One- and Two-Family Dwellings and Mobile Homes, in 1975. As of the most recent edition in 2013, there have been 12 updates to the standard reflecting the evolution of best practices, new technologies, and overall practical experience. NFPA Standard 13D and related NFPA Standard 13R have evolved to optimize system costs and fire safety for residential buildings. NFPA Standard 13D applies to one- and two-family dwellings and mobile homes while 13R applies to multifamily residential buildings up to four stories.

For example, when garages are required to be sprinklered, often nonmetallic pipes in the garage require additional protection due to requirements of the IRC and in the UL product listing. Similarly, in most cases, nonmetallic pipe systems in unfinished basements also require protection. In these cases, some contractors are driven to use metallic pipe in unfinished basements and garages in order to avoid the added cost of pipe protection.
