Assessing Mood Disorders and Suicidality in African Americans

Guide to Psychological Assessment with African Americans

Abstract

This manuscript is presented to provide insights into the assessment of major depressive disorder and suicidality, frequency, and severity of suicidal thoughts of African American youth and adults. Given the paucity of literature in this area, clinicians, researchers, and policy makers may be at a loss as to how to accurately assess these highly stigmatized illnesses in people of the African diaspora. In this chapter, the authors describe the major measures currently available and the steps taken to assess their utility with African Americans. We provide detailed information on the psychometric properties of the measures and information regarding our assessment of their utility with African Americans.
