Abstract

Traumatic Brain Injury results in a number of cognitive, behavioral, and physical issues that can impact employment. One way to help overcome these barriers is to implement effective vocational interventions. This chapter provides information on ways to assist individuals with moderate to severe Traumatic Brain Injury with returning to work. It begins by explaining Traumatic Brain Injury and the progression of a patient’s recovery. Next, the problems and complications associated with injury are reviewed, followed by vocational implications arising from possible difficulties a patient may face. Some medically oriented treatment strategies to help circumvent these issues are also offered. Then attention is turned to a review of various return to work models, including a more in-depth look at the individualized supported employment model to assist individuals with moderate and severe Traumatic Brain Injury to obtain/gain and maintain real work for real pay. The chapter concludes with ideas for the direction of future research.
