Handbook of Adolescent Behavioral Problems

Abstract

Child and adolescent obesity is one of the major public health problems of the modern era. Although increases in obesity rates among young people have slowed in recent years, about a third of American adolescents are overweight or obese. This chapter provides an overview of obesity in adolescence and considers sources of risk and resilience from a variety of different contexts. It reviews the state of evidenced-based treatment and prevention, acknowledging the limitations of the current body of experimental evidence while identifying novel, community-based approaches that might hold promise.
