Children of the Creeks: Cultural Characterization of Nasa Politics

Against Typological Tyranny in Archaeology

Abstract

This chapter discusses how the neo-evolutionary typological model is not applicable to the study of indigenous political formations of the Intermediate Area, specifically the Nasa from southwest Colombia. Ethnographic and historical data show that power and inegalitarian social structures arose from the application of local ideologies, not from the control of the means of production. This case highlights the problems resulting from the application of universal models (based on modern rationality) for understanding the historical paths of communities with different epistemes.
