Abstract

The fastest growing segment of the population in the United States is that composed of persons over the age of 65. Older adults are remaining increasingly active, leading to more injuries in this age group. These injuries are mostly due to falls and motor vehicle collisions. Despite facing an increased risk of mortality compared to their younger peers, when they are treated in the proper setting with age-specific management protocols, good outcomes can be achieved. Principles of care for geriatric patients will be discussed with consideration of their different physiology and common preexisting medical conditions. Osteoporosis is prevalent in elderly patients and profoundly affects fracture management. Comanagement with geriatricians or hospitalists should be pursued to help maximize outcomes in these patients and minimize the incidence of complications, including mortality. Advice on treatment of a variety of common geriatric fractures is provided, and outcomes after fractures, particularly those of the hip, in elderly patients are reviewed.
