Hip Arthroscopy and Hip Joint Preservation Surgery

Abstract

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a known complication of hip arthroscopy. Despite prophylactic treatment, HO still occurs in a small percentage of patients. Typically, small amounts of HO can be asymptomatic. However, HO can be symptomatic resulting in pain and reduced range of motion. Revision hip arthroscopy with HO excision is indicated in patients with symptoms recalcitrant to nonoperative management. In cases where revision hip arthroscopy is performed with HO excision, it is imperative to remove as much HO as possible and to administer appropriate prophylaxis to minimize HO recurrence. Small case series have shown improved patient reported outcomes after revision hip arthroscopy with HO excision, but larger studies with longer follow-up are needed to better understand the outcomes for these patients.
