Abstract
The first snare polypectomy was performed by Wolff and Shinya in 1969 just 3 months after their report of the first successful complete colonoscopy. This rapid progression from a diagnostic procedure to therapeutic intervention illustrates the driving force for the endoscopic removal of tissue from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Significant advances have developed since Wolff and Shinya’s initial experience making colonoscopic polypectomy the most common therapeutic endoscopic procedure performed today. This chapter describes the tools and techniques used for removing tissue from the GI tract for therapeutic purposes.
