Painful Diabetic Polyneuropathy

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is associated with several neuropathic syndromes that present with pain. Of these syndromes by far the commonest is chronic distal symmetrical polyneuropathy also known as diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN) present in around 50 % of subjects with DPN and 16–26 % of all diabetic patients, and is associated with impairment of sleep, mood disorders, and a significant reduction in quality of life. There are now several instruments that can assess the character and intensity of neuropathic pain; and its impact of on quality of life, activities of daily living, and mood.
