Abstract
This chapter focuses on awareness and knowledge about autism spectrum disorder in Pakistan. Caring for children with autism needs services of multiple health-care professionals. Their level of understanding can have significant impact on these children and families. Unfortunately, autism along with other childhood developmental disorders has not received adequate attention from policy makers in Pakistan. Current professionals in the field have various misconceptions regarding salient features of autism. This is a major barrier in improving health and well-being of children with autism in Pakistan. It is essential to identify the knowledge gaps which exist and take remedial measures. The future efforts should include heightened emphasis regarding autism spectrum disorder in medical and allied health sciences curriculum, continuous medical education, public awareness campaigns, promotion of school services, and caregiver support groups for these children and families. All these steps will enhance the early identification and diagnosis of autism, leading to early interventions and ultimately improving prognosis.
