Assessing Personality Using Self-Report Measures with Hispanic Clients

Guide to Psychological Assessment with Hispanics

Abstract

In this chapter, we review key issues in the application of self-report personality measures to Hispanic, Spanish-speaking clients. A discussion of translation, adaptation, and equivalence of measures serves as the backdrop for a review of instruments currently in use in Spanish and of recent research concerning applications. We focus on the Spanish versions of the MMPI-2, MMPI-A, MCMI-III, MBMD, PAI, and NEO; the availability of norms for these instruments; and significant extra-test correlates. In general, this review indicates that while the existence of these translations is an encouraging step toward the culturally appropriate assessment of Spanish-speaking Hispanics, more work is needed to develop instruments that are thoroughly adapted and normed for this group. The research reviewed here has identified important differences between Hispanics and non-Hispanic groups used for instrument development along dimensions including self-presentation, impression management, and expression of symptomatology.
