Assessing Psychosis in Hispanics

  • First Online:
Guide to Psychological Assessment with Hispanics

Abstract

The assessment and diagnosis of psychosis can be a difficult task and perhaps may pose an even greater challenge in culturally diverse populations. Specifically, it is both essential and challenging to validate diagnostic criteria and assessment items to ensure that they measure symptoms and indicators of psychosis as opposed to reflecting ethnic and socioeconomic factors, cultural beliefs, or religious practices. In this chapter, we will evaluate commonly used assessment and diagnostic tools for psychosis and provide relevant, research-based guidelines for using these measures with Hispanic populations.
