Abstract

Five years ago, I found myself in a vigorous debate with a group of farming, food, and environmental leaders in a small conference room. I was there by choice. In fact, it was partly my idea to bring together a visionary group across the agricultural spectrum to see if we could improve our understanding of “sustainable agriculture.” We started by discussing which management practices best described sustainable agriculture:
