Virus-Induced Models for Type 1 Diabetes in Mice

Diabetes and Viruses

Abstract

Epidemiological and experimental data strongly suggest that type 1 diabetes occurs as a detrimental combination of genetic predisposition and environmental triggering factors. Viruses have been implicated in the etiology of type 1 diabetes as environmental triggers due to epidemiological association as well as by direct isolation from pancreatic type 1 diabetes patients. The concept of virus-induced type 1 diabetes has been used as an experimental basis in several mouse models. Studies are reviewed on how virus-induced animal models have helped to understand the mechanisms of the pathogenesis of autoimmune-mediated diabetes. We intend to review how such findings obtained from animal models have helped to design novel therapeutic interventions for type 1 diabetes.
