Abstract

Based on motivation theories, such as Gardner and Lambert’s integrative motivation and instrumental motivation, Harmer’s extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation, and Atkinson’s achievement theory, a quantitative study is made on the questionnaire on 700 non-English majors from five vocational colleges in Shanghai. It is found that the students’ motivations for English learning are rather weak. Hence, the paper ends with raising some strategies to stimulate their motives for English study.
