Abstract

AD is a progressive neurodegenerative dementia. The pathological hallmarks of AD are accumulation of neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques. The neurofibrillary pathology, which is associated with cognitive dysfunction, neuron, and synapse loss, involves the limbic cortex early in the disease course and extends to the neocortex as the disease progresses. In addition to the histopathological changes, there is a gradual loss of cholinergic innervation in AD, which has been the basis for cholinesterase inhibitor therapy.
