Abstract

A seizure is a symptom; epilepsy is a disease. Seizures occur as the result of an electrical discharge in the brain. Epilepsy is a disease characterized by more than one seizure. The International League Against Epilepsy has proposed a classification of the epileptic syndromes, epilepsies, and related seizure disorders. Generalized and focal seizures are defined as seizures occurring in and rapidly involving bilaterally distributed networks (generalized) and within networks limited to one hemisphere, either discretely localized or more widely distributed (focal). Genetic, structural-metabolic, and unknown represent modified concepts to replace idiopathic, symptomatic, and cryptogenic categories in the prior classification. The causes of epilepsies are organized by electro-clinical syndromes, nonsyndromic epilepsies with structural-metabolic causes, and epilepsies of unknown cause.
