Perioperative Management of Patients with Rheumatic Disease

Abstract

The contribution of cardiac disease, especially ischemic heart disease, to the risk of noncardiac surgery cannot be overstated. The literature pertaining to the evaluation and treatment of patients with cardiac conditions in the perioperative setting is by far the most investigated and developed domain of perioperative medicine. This association has spawned consensus statements that guide best medical practice “as reported by Fleisher et al. (J Am Coll Cardiol 50:e159–242, 2007) and is a major consideration in professional societies devoted to this clinical domain.
