Abstract
Vascular cognitive impairment has several different causes but the clinical co-relation between carotid artery disease and cognitive impairment was first proposed by Fisher, based on a necropsy case.
He postulated that carotid occlusive disease can produce dementia and cognitive impairment through hypoperfusion alone and restoration of blood flow can improve condition. This case explores this important relationship and the consequences of recognizing this as a possibly reversible condition. It also highlights the overlap with post-stroke delirium and the potential for treatment.
