Abstract
Hughes syndrome is one of the families of autoimmune diseases, in which antiphospholipid antibodies appear to cause direct clinical damage through thrombosis.
There are definite indications of a genetic tendency, many patients, for example, having a family history of lupus or of thyroid disease.
In some cases, precipitating factors for the thrombosis, such as surgery or the oral contraceptive pill, are suspected, but in the majority of patients, there are no such clues.
