Abstract
The conditions most commonly seen in association with Hughes syndrome are lupus (1 in 5 lupus patients have positive aPL tests and Sjogren’s syndrome (less well studied but probably similar). Other autoimmune diseases, notably Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and autoimmune haemolytic anaemia, are also seen in association with the syndrome.
A rare, severe development is the so-called catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS) in which widespread intravascular thrombosis leads to multi-organ failure.
