Imaging in the Patient with Foot Complications

Management of Diabetic Foot Complications

Abstract

Imaging plays a central role in the accurate diagnosis of infection, neuropathic arthopathy and ischaemia of the diabetic foot. Early multi-disciplinary management and intervention is key to reducing the morbidity of diabetic foot complications. Although less sensitive than magnetic resonance, nuclear medicine or computed tomographic imaging, conventional plain radiography is useful for the initial rapid assessment of suspected osteomyelitis or neuropathic arthropathy. Duplex ultrasound and angiographic imaging should be performed to evaluate the extent of lower limb vascular disease and for planning urgent revascularisation in critical ischaemia.
