Abstract

Paul Ahnert was one of the last astronomers to make it from amateur astronomer to professional scientist without formal training. He was a passionate observer of variable stars and solar system bodies. He set down his observations and conclusions in numerous scientific publications. However, he is best known for 40 volumes of his Kalender für Sternfreunde (Calendar for Stargazers) and several books and many essays with instructions for observations and calculations for amateurs (Hoffmeister 1967; Richter 1982, 1997; Wenzel 1987, 1989).
