Introduction
The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation is one of the largest independent grantmaking foundations in the United Kingdom. Grants are intended for organizations which aim to improve the quality of life for people and communities in the United Kingdom in a sustainable manner. The Foundation is a charity registered in England and Wales, based in Mayfair, London, and has a staff of approximately 20. The foundation commits approximately £30 million annually for activities in United Kingdom leading to a free, stable, and socially cohesive society.
Brief History
Esmée Fairbairn Foundation was established in 1961 by Ian Fairbairn whose company, M&G, was a pioneer of the UK unit trust industry. The Foundation was set up as a memorial to Ian Fairbairn’s wife Esmée, who had played a prominent role in developing the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service and the Citizens Advice Bureaux.
