Definition
A drilling bit is used in petroleum exploration to drill a wellbore through various layers of rock formations to access oil or natural gas resources. It is engineered to penetrate the subsurface rock formations and to do so quickly and for as long as possible. These tools are classified as either roller cone or fixed cutter bits (Fig. 1). A roller cone drill bit is categorized as either a tungsten carbide insert (TCI) or steel tooth (ST) tool, while a fixed cutter bit is defined as either a polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) bit or impregnated bit type.
