The Northern Great Plains Province of Canada continues to the Arctic Ocean and is an extension of the Great Plains Province of the United States of America. It is bounded on the east by the Canadian Shield, on the west by the Rocky Mountains and Mackenzie Mountains, and on the north by the Arctic Ocean and covers an area of about 2,200,000 km2 (850,000 sq mi). Geographically it is contained within southern Manitoba, southern Saskatchewan, Alberta, northeastern British Columbia, and part of the Northwest Territories.
Historical Notes
Much of the original geological mapping centered around the discovery of coal (1857) in southern Saskatchewan; petroleum at Norman Wells (1920) in the Northwest Territories; natural gas (1883) at Langevin, Saskatchewan; and the discovery by Peter Pond in 1788 of bituminous sands at McMurray, Alberta.
