The Hawaiian Archipelago consists of the islands and reefs, strung out NW-SE for 2500 km, between, 18°54′ to 28°15′N and 154°40′ and 171°75′W. (Figs. 1 and 2). Hawaii itself (the “Big Island”) is the largest and southeasternmost island and has the only active volcanoes. The archipelago was first settled by Polynesians about 1200 years ago, acceded to the United States in 1898 and became the 50th state in 1959.
