Abstract
Beyond a practice testimony, the professional experience of a basic midwife illustrates the evolution of the knowledge and the techniques used over the past three decades. The progressive interest in the role of the father in obstetrics was based on the increasing number of couples interested in coming together, then on the partner’s integration in the various steps of the pregnancy. His presence in the delivery room can not be improvised and henceforth, must include the anticipation of the active part wherein the future father can play a role to support his partner on the one hand and to welcome the baby on the other hand. The birth preparation on the couple’s part is all the more important as the father and/or the mother are vulnerable. In these cases, a close cooperation with the mental health doctors proves to be indispensable.
