Abstract

Unlike in the case of other innovations in surgery, from the outset pediatric patients were often considered candidates for liver transplantation, although it was clear that the surgical procedure of liver grafting was more sophisticated in children than in adults. The first successful liver grafting was done in 1967, the patient being a 1.5-year-old girl with a hepatocel- lular carcinoma (Starzl et al. 1968). The number of complications, including technical failures, was extremely high at that time (CALNE et al. 1977), 1-year survival rates being less than 30% (Starzl et al. 1979). In the following years, advances in surgical and anesthesiological techniques and perioperative care and the development of potent immunosup- pressive agents resulted in a substantial improvement. Today, 1-year survival rates are above 80%.
