Introduction

Today it is known that already the old Egyptians used the advantages of lubrication. In those days fatty oils from animals or plants were used to reduce friction during transportation of big boulders that were needed for the construction of their monumental buildings. Examples of early lubricants can be found during the whole history, but the idea that a lubricant has to fulfill special functions in order to improve the operation of mechanical equipment is part of the industrialization process of the last century. An old engine oil specification dated 1910 stated: “The oil should flow well out of the can also during winter times and should have at the same time a high lubricity.” With technical progress, machines become smaller, more powerful, and at the same time more efficient which has a tremendous effect on the demand and functions for lubricants.
