Die Erkrankungen des venösen Systems werden trotz ihrer sozialmedizinischen Bedeutung meist unterschätzt. So geht man in Deutschland von bis zu 1 Million Patienten mit einem floriden oder abgeheilten Ulcus cruris aus, die im Durchschnitt 2 Monate pro Jahr deswegen krank sind und 7,5 Jahre früher berentet werden. Die Prävalenz der schweren Stadien der Venenerkrankungen dürfte jedoch eher rückläufig sein, zum einen auf Grund einer konsequenten Thromboseprophylaxe zum anderen durch eine frühzeitige Sanierung varikös degenerierter Venen.
