Definition
A co-worker is a person who a worker works with, in their role as worker. Co-workers can share their knowledge and expertise when others are faced with problems or novel situations; this can be especially useful when alternative solutions are not readily accessible. The co-worker relationship can also have effects on workplace dynamics, individual stress level, and relationships. Positive relationships between co-workers can be seen as supportive and beneficial in dealing with day-to-day problems and strains arising from employment (Deery, Iverson, & Walsh, 2010), and positive relationships can increase job satisfaction, job involvement, and organizational commitment (Dur & Sol, 2008). This supportive relationship may be more likely to occur in interactionally intense and high stress settings and can help one cope with high job demands.
