Zusammenfassung

Beruhigungs- und Schlafmittel finden seit Entwicklung der ersten Substanz 1832 breiten medizinischen Einsatz ebenso wie rekreationale und missbräuchliche Verwendung. Sie zählen zu den am häufigsten verschriebenen Medikamenten. Erlangten viele der älteren Substanzen traurige Berühmtheit durch ihre Verwendung bei Suiziden, so zeichnen sich die neueren Vertreter durch eine hohe therapeutische Breite bei alleiniger Anwendung aus. Das Abhängigkeits- und Suchtpotenzial bleibt jedoch trotz vieler Weiterentwicklungen und Einführung nebenwirkungsärmerer Präparate ein Hauptproblem der Behandlung. Intoxikationen ebenso wie körperliche Entzugssymptome können lebensbedrohliche Ausmaße annehmen und stellen einen häufigen Grund für die Notwendigkeit einer notfallmäßigen stationären Behandlung dar. Entscheidend ist daher die Prävention von Medikamentenabhängigkeit bei Vertretern dieser Substanzklasse.
